Florida medical schools are an attractive option for many premed hopefuls, given the perennially warm climate, rich cultural diversity, and affordable tuition for in-state students.
Florida also has the fourth-largest number of medical schools (10) of any state in the nation, following the 17 medical schools in New York, 16 medical schools in California, and 15 medical schools in Texas. Whether you are interested in serving marginalized communities through the University of Miami DOCS program or participating in cutting-edge research at the University of Florida, chances are there’s a medical school in Florida that has what you’re looking for.
Our goal for this guide is to answer the question, “Which are the ‘best’ medical schools in Florida?,” and to discuss what it takes to get into Florida medical schools so you can submit an application that maximizes your admissions odds.

We did some research on your behalf, gathering the most relevant information about each school to help paint a picture describing admissions throughout Florida medical schools.

While gathering this data, we noted the following trends:
- Nine Florida medical schools appear in the 2023 U.S. News Best Medical Schools: Research ranking, with three in the top 50.
- Tuition and fees to attend Florida medical schools are comparable to schools outside Florida. In-state residents enjoy significantly reduced tuition at public institutions.
- While out-of-state students must pay more than in-state students at nearly all of the schools, many Florida medical schools will allow you to reclassify your residency status after a year for tuition purposes.
- Florida has a mix of schools that have considerable in-state resident preferences, but also several that admit as many out-of-state students as in-state students. (Note: In-state vs. out-of-state interview rates were not found for two schools.)

With a total of ten medical schools in Florida, most of which give preference to in state applicants, Florida is a great state for medical school hopefuls. One of the most notable osteopathic programs in the country, Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, has a campus in Bradenton, Florida. Additionally, the University of Florida, University of Miami, and University of South Florida are ranked in the top sixty for research by US News and World Report. According to the 2020 Physician Workforce Annual Report, nearly 60% of clinicians in Florida are over the age of 50. This means that the state will be in desperate need of tomorrow’s doctors so most of the medical schools hope to train students who will ultimately practice in Florida.
