Central Michigan University College of Medicine is a 4-year MD-granting program that has a deep commitment to the underserved in the state of Michigan. CMU School of Medicine’s curriculum is a mix of case-based and small-group learning centered around the body’s systems. For clinical training, all students will complete a Comprehensive Community Clerkship as well as hospital rotations. CMU offers a mentorship program between M1 and M2 students, a week-long series on burnout and suicide, and an anonymous praise and concern form.

Michigan State University College of Human Medicine is a 4-year MD-granting program that welcomed its first class in 1966. The College of Human Medicine is a community-based medical school that offers seven clinical campuses with the two main campuses being in East Lansing and Grand Rapids. The College of Human Medicine splits students into learning societies of about 8-10 students with a lead faculty member to help students develop a learning plan. The Shared Discovery Curriculum includes early clinical experience (6 weeks in), middle clinical experience (year 2), and late clinical experience (year 3 and 4). Between clinical experiences, they have intersessions (core, foundational, special).

The University of Michigan School of Medicine is a 4-year MD-granting program that was the first medical school to own and run its own hospital. The curriculum offers M-Home, which offers students small group settings and the chance to be paired with a faculty coach. Within the first month, students engage in clinical experiences and are given opportunities to address healthcare challenges of interest. Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine is a 4-year MD-granting program. The School of Medicine is a partnership between Oakland University and Beaumont Health. Students have the opportunity to complete their clinical training at one of three Beaumont hospitals: Royal Oak (Level I Trauma Center), Troy (one of the nation’s highest volume community hospitals), or Grosse Pointe (acquired in 2007). OUWB School of Medicine values holistic physician development and believes in the transmission of medical education and service from one generation to another. They have a strong focus on helping students succeed while maintaining work-life balance. Throughout the school year, there are workshops and programs available to help students.

Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine is a 4-year MD-granting program that welcomed its inaugural class in 2014. WMed has offered some innovative new ideas for students. To start with, students write their own oath as a group, collectively defining themselves as physicians. In the first few weeks of school, students participate in clinical experiences and Medical First Responder training. The curriculum is decompressed, which means there is no long summer break. Instead, students get weeks off throughout the school year. Students also take Step 1 in Year 3, due to Step 1 containing clinical content. WMed is focused on creating a collaborative, welcoming environment for students.
