Each year, the MS2 class writes a funny/helpful First Year Survival Guide for the incoming class. Boonshoft School of Medicine is a community-based medical school that has six teaching hospitals. Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine is a 4-year MD-granting program that welcomed its first class in 1843. Case Western Reserve School of Medicine has a legacy of innovation in medical education, initiating an integrated organ systems approach in 1952 and launching the first MD/PHD program in the country. The School of Medicine provides all matriculating students with laptops. The goal is to train physicians with the foundations of clinical mastery, research and scholarship, leadership, and civic professionalism. The curriculum is broken into system blocks for the first two years, followed by third-year thesis research or clinical blocks, with a fourth year of advanced clinical studies. OSUCOM recognizes the implicit bias that may impact admission committees and healthcare disparities. As a result, Ohio State has one of the most diverse student populations out of all US medical schools, with 26 percent being from underrepresented minorities. The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine is a 4-year MD-granting program that traces its roots back to the Medical College of Ohio, which welcomed its first class in 1819. The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine is the second-oldest public medical school in the US. University of Cincinnati works to create a culture with “heart” as the guiding principle. Students say they feel exposed to a variety of patients, prepared to do well on their board exams, and supported by their classmates. During the first year, students are paired with a primary-care physician to begin working on clinical skills. Students at UCCOM for the past three years have surpassed both the national pass rate and national mean for USMLE Step 1 scores. Students follow a prep series for their boards, followed by a student-led board review course, and then individual prep time.

The University of Toledo College of Medicine is a 4-year MD-granting program that welcomed its first class in 1969. The University of Toledo recently switched to a new curriculum of systems-based learning. This curriculum incorporates team-based learning, E-learning, simulation, and other approaches. Students begin clinical experience within their first year of medical school through the ICE Program. Students have multiple opportunities to be involved, whether that’s through one of the many clubs or Community Care Clinics. During the fourth year, the school offers students the opportunity to take electives, if they wish to do so, in Ethiopia, Jordan, China, India, Zambia, or the Philippines. All students are required to take clerkships in a rural setting, as well. Students appreciate the rural rotation because it allows for one-on-one time with a preceptor and it gives them experience in an underserved community.

Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine was founded to help with Ohio’s family physician shortage. The Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine has three different campuses for students to study at. The Athens campus exposes students to the needs of rural populations. The Cleveland Campus involves students in the Cleveland Clinic system. The Dublin campus is home to the OhioHealth Dublin Methodist Hospital. Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine is dedicated to community health, and their students participate in more than 4,500 volunteer hours in a variety of settings.
