WHEN YOUR CLINICAL GRADES ARE JUST AS SUBPAR AS YOUR PRECLINICAL GRADES

Аноним asked: Hi. I’m taking my second sem in undergrad. I used to do so well in high school but i had to drop out my final year due to personal reasons. After two years I took my GED and enrolled as soon as i can into a university. However on my first semester, my grades were on the low side because I had trouble adjusting. I’m hoping to bring up my grades this semester, but I was wondering if you could give me some advice whether my chances are now ruined for med school. Thank you. P.S. I LOVE YOUR BLOG

No way. Never assume your chances are ruined because of some bad grades your first semester! It makes me so sad how many freshmen in college are quick to quit the premed route just because they struggled at first. For one thing, you have so much time to improve your GPA. For another, your grades are not the be all and end all. There’s so much you can do to boost your application later on. If you want to go to med school, just keep working. You already sound like you’re very ambitious and hardworking – to take your GED and enroll ASAP in college after having to quit school for personal reasons – that’s very respectable. Sounds like you’re intelligent, determined, and passionate about going to med school. Don’t give up!

What We Should Call Med School

Do you call attendings, residents, and med school staff by their first names or Dr/Mr/Mrs+last names?

This, though I would totally

(A) call an attending Dr so and so a billion times until they threatened to slap me if I didn’t use their first name

(B) judge a resident who insisted on being called Dr so aso by a med student

Attendings should be addressed Dr last name unless they tell you otherwise. It depends on residents. I always told the students they could call me by my first name. When I was a student it varied. There are some residencies that interns have to refer to their senior residents as Dr lastname.

You generally can’t go wrong by addressing attendings as “Dr. x” and residents by just their name. Agree that any resident that insists on being called “Dr. x” to medical students is lame.

It depends. I always call them Dr whatever for attendings. But residents seem to prefer first names. But just call then Dr so and so. If they say “call me X” then do so.

Actually, I got to the point of calling certain attendings just by their last names. Not out of disrespect but because that was the norm.
Warning: never use nicknames. Even if other people use it casually. You can ask about it, but refrain from using it.
