Microbiology (BIO 255E/BIO 255LE)

Microbiology Lecture (BIO 255E/BIO 255LE) is an online biology lecture/laboratory combination course that offers you an introduction to key principles in microbiology. You’ll gain a functional understanding of microscopic organisms (microorganisms), their role in disease and the environment, and our defenses against infections.

After completing the courses above, you’ll be well-prepared to pursue a degree in fields such as health science, pre-medicine, chemistry and biology, or pharmacy.

This course does not have any prerequisites.

Course Format

Microbiology Lecture (BIO 255E/BIO 255LE) is an online, asynchronous, self-paced course that includes both a 3-credit lecture session and a 1-credit laboratory session. This course does not have specific meeting times or deadlines. You will complete your assignments on your schedule over 16 weeks using Blackboard, an online learning platform. You will also have the support of an instructor, as well as 24/7 online tutoring as you progress through the coursework. After completing this course, you will receive a final letter grade and be able to request an official transcript from our Registrar’s Office. Please note: Students can register for the lecture, the lab, or both. Registration is separate for each of these courses.

Course Cost

Courses run at a rate of $500 per credit hour. The School of Professional Studies offers reduced tuition options to new MCPHS students.

Students who have not previously taken coursework at MCPHS are eligible to receive a 50% reduction in the cost of tuition for one course. Please complete the discount code form to receive the discount code.

Degree applicants who have been admitted to a degree program and paid their enrollment deposit are eligible to receive a 50% reduction in the cost of tuition for any prerequisite course that the Admission Office has indicated must be completed before starting the degree program. MCPHS is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE).

Course Materials

We suggest that students purchase their course materials after registering and gaining access to their course. Detailed instructions will then be provided.

Microbiology: An Introduction, Tortora, G. J., Funke, B. R., and Case, C. L., 13th Ed., Pearson Education, Inc.; Access Card (code) to publishers website resources, Pearson’s Modified Mastering Microbiology Program.

Refund Policy

Students can receive a full tuition refund if they drop a course within five business days of registering. Course changes will also be allowed during this five-day window.

After the five-day window closes (and up until the course’s completion date), students may choose to withdraw from the course without a refund. This would result in a “W” on their student record.

Technical Requirements

Students should use a computer to interact with the course content rather than a mobile device, iPad, or Tablet. Please confirm you have the minimum computer specifications by reviewing the technology requirements for MCPHS before registering for your course.

It is the student’s responsibility to ensure they have all the required resources needed to access the course material and software.

How to Register

Once you’ve selected your course of interest and are ready to register, all that’s left is to create your account and pay the tuition fees. You’ll be asked to create a username and password, provide some basic personal information, and pay the course’s tuition. You’ll receive access to your course within two business days of paying tuition.

At the conclusion of Microbiology participants will be able to:

  • List six general guidelines for ensuring accurate results in specimen collection.
  • Explain the protective structures of viruses, parasites, fungi, and prions.
  • Discuss the advantages of four different methods of sterilization and disinfection.
  • List four routes of transmission and precautions that can be used to help prevent infection.
  • Identify the guidelines for maintaining a sterile field.
  • Define five viruses treated with antiviral drugs.
  • List common infections associated with major body systems.
  • Describe five types of pneumonia.

Course Credit and Completion Time

Students have access to the online Microbiology course for one full year. This course is self-paced and completion time is dependent upon many factors, including the student’s prior knowledge, reading comprehension, and exercises completed. Students receive a certificate with CEUs when passing the course with an overall average of 70% or better on the chapter tests and completing a short course evaluation.

Upon successful completion of Microbiology students will receive a certificate of completion for 3.8 Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Corexcel is authorized to award CEUs by the International Accreditors for Continuing Education and Training. Acceptance of CEUs is at the discretion of your institution. To determine if this course will meet specific school or program requirements, submit the course syllabus and accreditation information to your advisor or registrar for approval prior to enrolling.
