Introduction

If you’re applying to medical school in the U.S. or Canada, you’ll have to take the notorious Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). Each year, you’ll have many potential MCAT test dates to choose from, and given the test’s importance in the med school admissions process, you’ll want to plan ahead to make sure you snag your ideal test date.

How long is the MCAT?

The actual exam begins at 8:00 AM and lasts 6 hours, 15 minutes. Administrative procedures and breaks bring the total test day time to about 7.5 hours.

When is the MCAT offered?

The AAMC is offering 30 MCAT test dates in 2024 between January and September, so you can plan to study for and take the exam whenever is most convenient for you.

Do MCAT test dates fill up?

Yes, they do, so it behooves you to register for the MCAT as early as possible. Otherwise, your preferred location or test date may not be available and you may have to take the exam at a less convenient time or at a less convenient location.

How much does it cost to take the MCAT?

As of September 2023, the MCAT registration fee (for those taking the test in 2024) is $335 for U.S. examinees and $450 for international test takers. If you qualify for the AAMC’s Fee Assistance Program (FAP), the registration fee is $140.

RECOMMENDED:  Georgetown Medical School Acceptance Rate

Note that if you have to cancel or reschedule your test, you’ll be charged additional fees. The exact amount will depend on how far in advance you’re amending your original registration.

How and when can I register for the MCAT?

You sign up for all MCAT test dates through the AAMC MCAT registration website.

Starting in October, you’ll be able to sign up for MCAT dates between January and June. Depending on where you plan to take the exam, registration will open on either October 25th or 26th at noon. This map can help you determine the exact date your test location will open for registration.

For MCAT dates in July, August, and September, you can register beginning in February.

When does the MCAT end?

Boost your MCAT score by 12 points or more.

What time of the day does the MCAT end in the afternoon? If you have taken it, please comment. I would like to book my transportation right after my MCAT and fall asleep on the bus.

It really depends upon how fast you are, if you take your breaks, what time you start, etc. The exam is supposed to start at 8:00am. If you took all of your breaks, started right on time, and went through the entire 10 minute intro, it would end around 3:15pm. When I took the test, they got me started around 7:45am, I didn’t use my full breaks, and I didn’t need all of the time. I ended a little after 2:00pm.

Expect to be there for about 8 hours (like a fill day of work). If you add up all the testing/break time, you get:

RECOMMENDED:  Top Emergency Medicine Residency Programs

95 minutes (Chem/Phys)
90 minutes (CARS)
95 minutes (Bio/Biochem)
95 minutes (Psych/Soc)
10 min break (optional)
10 min break (optional)
30 minute lunch (optional)

This adds up to 425 minutes, or 7 hours, 5 minutes.

Long story short, expect to start ~ 8am, expect to be leaving by 4pm, latest if all goes normally.

Sorry to read bump this post, but are they no longer offering the exam at 1 p.m. since the exam takes a lot longer now to finish? All the test dates for 2017 that I’ve seen are only for 8 a.m. so I was curious if 2018 would provide us with a 1 p.m. test time.
